I encountered the same problem when upgrading from Intrepid to Jaunty. Rebooted to complete the upgrade and ran dpkg --configure -a to finish the python-xml install. Got this:

$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

pycentral: pycentral pkginstall: Not overwriting local files:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I believe this means that you had a locally (non-packaged) install of python-xml and that dpkg is respecting this by not installing over the files installed by it. Could you try removing your previous version of python-xml and reinstalling the package? Thanks in advance.

That what exactly what I did. No more problems reported.

I installed the package originally so long ago I don't recall if it was from a .deb or via apt.

I ran an 'apt-get remove' and 'apt-get install' to reinstall. All seems well now.

I had the same issue. I used Greg Lund-Chaix's suggestion and it seems to have resolved it.
