python-qt4 based apps crash on Quantal with overlayscrollbars enabled

Bug Description
I tried a variety of python-qt4 based application on Ubuntu Quantal with Unity and they all crash using all the memory until the system dies or the application is killed.
Application I tried:
hplip-toolbox, anki, calibre, eric, trimage
They crash at the moment the main window start painting.

Disabling liboverlay scrollbars with 'export LIBOVERLAY_ SCROLLBARS= 0' works around the problem.
