Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I tried to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 on a Dell Dimension 8300, P4, 2.5 GiB RAM.

Three error messages were produced:

Could not install 'python'
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4

Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/openoffice.org-emailmerg_1%3a3.0.1-9ubuntu3_all.deb'
pre-dependency problem - not installing openoffice.org.emailm [rest of message cut off in screenshot]

Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade is now aborted. Your system woulc be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Thanks for your bugreport.

Please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* to this bugreport.

It looks like this error is caused by python (or rather by the rtupdate script):

2009-04-27 10:05:02,922 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'python': 'subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4
'
2009-04-27 10:05:02,923 DEBUG running apport_pkgfailure() python: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4

I reassign. Please include the logs so that we can further diagnose the problem.

 Thanks Michael

affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) → python-defaults (Ubuntu)
Changed in python-defaults (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Confirmed

Michael,

Here are the log files. I'm assuming you only need the top-level files; if you also need the files from sub-directories 200904270926 and 200904270927, please let me know.

Here's a little more info about the problem. First of all, I suspect that despite the error message (see the final attachment) saying that the upgrade had failed, the system actually has been upgraded to 9.04. I say this because the splash screen has changed, Amarok has been replace by Amarok 2, and there is no sound (that usually happens when I upgrade Ubuntu). Finally, every time I log in I get an error box saying that indexing has failed.

Regards,
