work around found on the web:

"Occasionally in Ubuntu Linux, some application hogs the pulseaudio sound server causing other programs like vlc and mplayer to not be able to actually play sound. There is a simple fix for this problem and it can be found at the command prompt level.

Open up BASH and do the following...

mousecrash$ sudo pkill -9 pulseaudio

mousecrash$ pulseaudio"

The commands

sudo pkill -9 pulseaudio; pulseaudio

worked for me.

Those commands work for me too. A good workaround/temp fix (distributed with apt) might be to check if restart of service is ok AND retrials less than X (bug-report automatic else if) AND sound normally works...

That way the dev team at least would buy some time to test and fix the code properly.

Cheers.

I also am effected by this bug Ubuntu 12.04 usually when in a browser firefox or epiphany-browser with a lot of CPU usage. I also use gnome-orca to read content on the computer so loss of sound is very bad.
