Sorry, new to Ubuntu and probably something I am doing wrong, but I am not getting any sound and just working through the help wiki's i find.

Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) reached end-of-life on May 9, 2013.

We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the latest Ubuntu version and re-test.
