No audio devices after latest batch of updates

Bug Description

There's no physical audio device left to configure after the latest batch of updates. A dummy Output device is visible, but that's it. In the Sound configuration, under the Hardware tab, there is no hardware to be found. Everything worked fine before today's update.

Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) reached end-of-life on May 9, 2013.
