System: fresh install of Kubuntu 10.4 (kde 4.4.5) 64 bits.
Fresh install due to OSS4 sound issues (no sound system wide), with reuse of home folder

Hi,
I removed pulseaudio (sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio & sudo aptitude purge pulseaudio).
Still no sound in vlc and other *non* kde applications. Also the startup sound is also missing.

Hi,
I did a fresh install (even a new user ...as I thought it had something to do with a user setting).
Amarok is installed by default. Also installed VLC via "sudo apt-get install vlc" ...no sound in VLC.
Searched forums somewhat more... found a partial solution removed "vlc-plugin-pulse" (Which is installed by default.)
Set in VLC to ALSO and set output to a specific device. Now it comes.....
I have sound in VLC only I have to close (terminate Amarok) for this and vice versa.
The strange thing is (when VLC is active) I can test my sound in Amarok (via configure Phonon) and I hear sound, but I have no sound when playing a song in Amarok.
Startup sound is correct now.

I have done a clean install of Kubuntu 10.10 no (sound related) issue left. Can be closed for me

By default, pulseaudio is not installed as part of Kubuntu 10.04. You may have installed pulseaudio inadvertently, or a package pulled in pulseaudio without you knowing it. What happens if you remove the pulseaudio package from your system?
affects ubuntu/pulseaudio
