Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

This is a fresh installation of Ubuntu on my PC. On starting the PC after installation I observed that sound is muted by default. Not a major problem but can be confusing to new users.

I can't view the screenshot using a text-only MUA ;)

Is External Amplifier muted by default on a fresh install? Does it need to
be toggled for audible sound? If so, to which value?

Daniel,

What do you mean by 'External Amplifier'? Where do I check its status?

Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote :

It's an alsa control. Use amixer or alsamixer to query/set its value.

External Amplifier is not muted by default. It has only two states, mute and unmute. Also it's state does not affect the sound output.

I am affected too but I did dist-upgrade from 09.10. It is a regression for me.
'~$ uname -a; Linux T43 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux'
After a reboot alsamixer shows the Master volume control muted. De-muting it and advancing this volume control solves the problem for me.
