Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi, after new inwstall of Ubuntu Karmic Koala I have noticed several problems with my sound.

First, problem of overmodulated sound (buggy setting in sound - also in pavucontrol) mentioned in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/433237
Daniel T Chen helped me with setting pulseaudio -k && PULSE_NO_SIMD=1 pulseaudio. But I did not get any explanation, why this is happening. In my opinion, this is major bug, and is still not fixed. Am I being punished for buying 5.1 surround?

My second problem is stuttering of right front and back channel. After setting PULSE_NO_SIMD (my problem No.1) I got all 6 channels stuttering when overcome certain volume level - so I can not use 5.1 at all. Sound is like blinking (flickering - if it was light and not sound:)).
I have tried several modifications in daemon.conf, but no help.

I want to add in previous Ubuntu version everything was OK. When using only 2 channels, sounds and volume control is OK. I am not sure but maybe it's has something to to with my MB Asus SLI A8N Deluxe and it's soundcard.

Has anybody this problems? Thanks.

Hello, thank you for reporting this bug. I would like to clarify one sentence: "I got all 6 channels stuttering when overcome certain volume level". Does this mean that the stuttering starts when you raise the volume to a certain level? I am not sure if I am interprating correctly.

Also, could you please run the following: apport-collect -p alsa-base 490483
This will help to collect current info on your setup.

Hello,

first of all, default status is: right front and right back is stuttering + bug in volume control (Volume preferencies, tab output; or pavucontrol, tab "Output Devices" - values over "Base" makes overmodulated sound - mention in bug 433237). I use "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" and connector "Analog Output / Amplifier"

After Daniel T Chen's advice (pulseaudio -k && PULSE_NO_SIMD=1 pulseaudio) bug with overmodulated sound disappeared (but stuttering of 2 channels still present). Stuttering spreads to all 6 channels when slider is over "Base" value in pavucontrol. Under "Base" there is only 2 channels stuttering.

I forgot to mentioned, that I use latest pulseaudio from your repo:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Concerning apport-collect - uff, I do not even know this apps exists.... First time I run it, I cancelled it during run, because I realised I have only Stereo turn on (2 channels). So after that, I set 5+1 and run it again....

Thanks for helping.

Is there a particular reason why you are using pulseaudio from the PPA? Were you experiencing similar issues with the default pulseaudio?

default - ubuntu repository - pulseaudio caused me problem, that flash in firefox has no sound. i read all forums on the internet and no help. so doing trick with the latest pulseaudio (in ubuntu, you have to wait half year - holly marry - for upgrade except backports) results in working sound in flash. isn't PPA solve developers of pulseaudio if you ask this?
and yes, unfortunatelly, my stuttering problem was the same in previous (ubuntu) pulseaudio.
