What operating system are you using as the host, and how is VMWare attempting to talk to the host's audio hardware, i.e alsa or oss?

If you are using Linux on the host and its Ubuntu, try killing pulseaudio, and running VMWare again.

The host is Windows7. Using alsa to talk to host hardware. Audio works with 9.04 guest.

Did you also install vmware-tools in the guest?
