Binary package hint: pulseaudio
If I go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and then choose the Hardware tab, there are no hardware devices lists.
However I have this:

You're running kernel 2.6.28, while Karmic currently ships with kernel 2.6.31. Can you try with the standard Karmic kernel and see if that helps?
