Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Under Jaunty (and any previous Ubuntu releases), plugging headphones to the headphone mini-jack out plug cuts sounds to the main speakers (analog) and directs it to the headphone output instead.

In Karmic, that even is not detected, and the sound keep playing on the speakers even though the headphones have been connected. No sound goes to the headphones either, the user has to manually use the volume properties (right click on the sound icon>Preferences) to change the output.

I'd like to change the description, since the situation has changed a bit after updates, but Launchpad won't accept it "Entity-body was not a well-formed JSON document."

Here's how the description should now read:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Under Jaunty (and any previous Ubuntu releases), plugging headphones to the headphone mini-jack out plug cuts sounds to the main speakers (analog) and directs it to the headphone output instead.

In Karmic, that even is not detected, and the sound keep playing on the speakers even though the headphones have been connected. The headphones also have sound (since an update from the first time this bug was reported, initially the headphones didn't get any sound) Manually use the volume properties (right click on the sound icon>Preferences) to change the output to "Analog Headphones" mutes the sound for both speakers and headphones.

I also tried adding:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but there was no change.

Should be fixed by installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic and rebooting.

Please attach your /proc/asound/card*/codec* without headphones inserted and
with hp inserted.

I'm probably not doing it the right way, but that's the only thing that comes to mind:
Headphones not inserted:
$ ls /proc/asound/card*/codec*

Headphones inserted:
$ ls /proc/asound/card*/codec*

Well, instead of 'ls' you want 'cat', but idea is sane.

In Jaunty, when headphones are inserted, Pin-ctls: 0x40: OUT VREF_HIZ is changed to Pin-ctls: 0x00: VREF_HIZ. In Karmic, it stays the same whether headphones are inserted or not.

Posting once again here just to say that after the very latest update of pulseaudio last night (I guess the final update before the release freeze of 9.10) the issue appears to be resolved for me and the headphones jack insertion is now properly detected, there is audio in the headphones and speakers are properly muted.

I'm not really concerned about the headset canceling the speakers, but I do have that same issue and it may be related to my real issue of audio being scratchy for some applications. For example, when I reboot, and I go to Sound Preferences -> Input, my mic will be detected and if I talk into it I can see the levels changing to reflect the talking - slightly. Then, if I start a recording program like Sound Recorder, or if I start an application like Counterstrike in Wine, the audio gets garbled and the voice stops working. The only difference I have from the instructions above is I was advised to put this line in alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=alc883-6stack-dig
