Distorted login sound, Jaunty Alpha 4

Bug Description
The login sound is badly distorted when I boot into Jaunty alpha 4, which I think has something to do with the audio setup on this notebook, a Vaio SZ650 (HDA Intel). Perhaps there is a conflict between 2 different configurations, indicated by the 2 speaker icons in my taskbar?
Sound configuration problems on this notebook have been reported at bug #195695, and may be related to this bug.
