Same issue here with Jaunty since quite a while now. I had once a really nice volume applet (not the Gnome one but similar to pavucontrol) and I guess it was from module-x11-xsmp (but I may be wrong). However, this module tries to start in the session (see /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-module-xsmp.desktop) so it should either load correctly or be removed. I attached a strace output which may contain some information.

I've found that lot of lines are commented into :

- /etc/pulse/client.conf
- /etc/pulse/default.pa

maybe some others config files hidden somewhere too.

i've run several times "dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio" but that command seems to forget a lot about settings.

Still searcha working script to bring back pulseaudio to " default " settings

With latest Lucid beta 1, message appears.

Apparently, module is loaded despite warning on failure to "open connection to session manager", as I receive a message that it cannot be loaded twice after pactl load-module.
