Video, Flash and system have no sound

Bug Description

I am working with Ubuntu 8.10 but have no system sound and also no sound when I play a video and Flash.
Some video players crash because the can not find a sound plugin.

When I close Pulse audio I can play a video with some players (with sound) and play music with only Gxine.
But this will not solve the problem.
I think this is a very important bug to be solved if there are more people with the same problem.

The sound did work fine with Ubuntu 7.10 (my first Ubuntu) but with the release of Ubuntu 8.04 the sound didn't work anymore.
I think this problem is caused by Pulse audio because in Ubuntu 8.04 Pulse audio was implemented for the first time.

desktop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xf5010000 irq 17
 1 [DMX6Fire ]: ICE1712 - TerraTec DMX6Fire
                      TerraTec DMX6Fire at 0xd000, irq 19

With Ubuntu 8.04 I have done all troubleshooting and with help from the Dutch forum but it didn't solve the problem.
Also if there is a solution with troubleshooting than it is still a bug because the sound have to work out of the box.

After I did this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems) troubleshooting the sound still not work.

When I test the sound in Preferences > Sound I get the following message:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

Ok, thank you.

I have the problem from the moment that Ubuntu use Pulse audio.
With Ubuntu 7.10 I had no sound problems.

Maybe it is a regression of the linux kernel. Please, test without pulseaudio (uninstall or stop it) and tell us if it works with alsa, esd or oss.
