Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I'm playing a music of Zé Ramalho in Rhythmbox. What should happen when volume of PCM in alsa mixer is muted? No sound from speakers, ok?
But for Intrepid last repository version, in my acer 4520 laptop, it promotes a crackling sound (sharp noise).
And if I unmute the volume of PCM? Restore the volume level before muted?
No, its not restoring the 'original' sound level, and continue to produce noise.

Any solution?
thankyou!

uname -r
2.6.27-7-generic

lsb_release -rd
pulseaudio:
  Installed: 0.9.10-2ubuntu9
  Candidate: 0.9.10-2ubuntu9

I'm also getting noise when muted (popping/static), but this goes away when the volume is at anything other than zero.
Interestingly in alsa volume control muting "PCM" in the vloume control produces the static noise, muting "master" produces no sound (as you would expect from mute).
This is on a dell d620 laptop.

Should have mentioned - this problem is new with intrepid - not present in hardy with all updates as of yesterday.

I guess I should also mention that audio is fine when not muted - even quiet parts of tracks are fine - no distortion.
The noise only happens when it is muted.
Is there any further info we can give to help debug/reproduce this?

this looks like a duplicate of #272321 which is currently assigned to the kernel team, but in the comments people have suggested that removing pulseaudio resolves the problem...

Indeed, seems like a duplicate.

But, all I hope is that it will be fixed. I don't want to remove pulseaudio..
