Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Today when I booted my Intrepid machine, no sound were there. Some updates must have ruin PulseAudio. Now what I get as output is just some nervous metallic sound.

To fix this I had to manually kill PulseAudio:
sudo killall pulseaudio

and start alsa:

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-util start

Please let me know if you need some additional information.

Did you check your mixer settings with pavucontrol /before/ killing pulseaudio?

(Also, for troubleshooting ALSA, please run the alsa-info.sh script referenced at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems)

Man that's strange, I ran the script, installed pavocontrol, rebooted and now everything works fine. I suppose that some of the dependencies that were with the program fixed the problem. Also because I had rebooted before to see whether the problem could vanish.

If you're still interested, here you can find the output of the script: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=0bf8711557a7215da937d3efadd02c30d0d0aa66

confirming that my sound system was broken by the last updates on 8 Oct 08. However I was not able to get my sound back by shutting down pulse audio and restarting ALSA.

All devices are there and I can actually "see" the sound via the paman tool. But there is only some very quiet noise is coming out from the speakers.

It was working perfectly before todays updates for intrepid.

alsa-info.sh output will be coming soon.

ALSA info: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=699210b3ddaeeceb9b8360bf71355d1abc87fcdf

comes from clean start up.

Furthermore ALSA daemon seems to stop the shutdown. If I halt my maschine, it is hanging at "Shutting down ALSA server...". But thats maybe another bug.

xenesis, the shutdown hang is fixed already in intrepid-updates, and yes, it is another bug.

Also, note from your alsa-info.sh output:

Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 255
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-51.00dB]
 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-51.00dB]
 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You need to increase the levels of the mixer element 'PCM'.
