getting static instead of sound on Intrepid Alpha 1

Bug Description

Binary package hint: base-installer

I get the normal sound the is usually played just prior to the logon and password screen but after the logon when it gets to the point where the normal Ubuntu opening sound plays I am getting just static (sounds sort of like bacon frying) instead of the familiar Ubuntu sound theme.

The sounds on this machine play just fine under all previous Ubuntu versions/releases.

was the sound muted on startup (check PCM in volume control)?
If so then this is probably a duplicate of bug #220842
