[Software]

Ubuntu 8.04
Linux 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 4 16:35:01 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

[Packages version]
alsa-base-1.0.16-0ubuntu4
alsa-tools-1.0.15-2ubuntu4
alsa-utils-1.0.15-3ubuntu2
gstreamer0.10-alsa-0.10.18-3
firefox-3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8
exaile-0.2.11
TuxGuitar-1.0-rc2

[Expected to happen]

When listening music through Exaile, Audacious and start Firefox with a flash movie, expect to be played both sounds, from Exaile and from firefox.
The same I expect from tuxguitar, when it is started, other programs also should use sound.

[What happen instead]

When I start TuxGuitar to play, and Exaile is already started and playing, TuxGuitar give me error saying that MIDI system is unavailable.
When I start all this programs separatly firefox+flash, tuxguitar and exaile the sound works ok.

From my observation is like each program firefox(flash), tuxguitar(timidity++) and exaile(??) are blocking the sound output just for their own use.
But also I tested Totem and Exaile, they are able to play simultaniosly, each playing their song.

Have a nice day and best regards,
Alexandru.

Yea, it's a problem, with pulseaudio. I have the same problem.
When I kill pulse audio and restart both, firefox and exaile, it works.
I think it's a bug in pulseaudio.

The same happens to me when I run both, Firefox and Amarok. I can only hear sound in whichever one of the two I start listening to a sound first.

So if I start a video in Youtube I will be able to hear it. But then I can't hear anything in Amarok. So I have to restart both and play music in Amarok. But then I cannot hear anything in Firefox.

I have the same problem with Firefox and Audacious. It seems to happen somewhat randomly if I stop play in audacious while Firefox is open.

Thing is, it's not that audacious is playing the song but I can't hear anything, it actually wont play the song. It hangs trying to access it until I I close Firefox completely, and preview any song by hovering my cursor over it. Immediately, audacious will stop hanging and play the song it was trying to play.

On the other hand, if audacious is playing and I try to watch a flash video in Firefox, Firefox will play it without sound most of the time. Sometimes, though, the video will hang every 5 seconds until I tell it to play again, still without sound, until I close audacious, even if audacious isn't currently playing anything.

I was thinking it might be a soundcard channel issue, because I'm using my cheapo nvidia motherboard sound, which probably doesn't have many channels. The original poster also seems to be using his mobo sound.

Anybody else?

I also have the same problem, when Flash in Firefox is playing audio, neither VLC nor mplayer can play audio until I stop Firefox and restart the video player.

I have integrated audio in a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop with the Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 chipset :

82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

I have the same thing here, with amarok and firefox.
It only started recently, within the last 3 or 4 days.
Does this match any firefox/flash updates?
It can get annoying, as Amarok does the very fast song changing, meaning I can type anything for some reason, and also, pausing a song while a flash video is playing causes the track to skip repeatedly. Killing amarok doesn't fix this.
It is a shame as It's only started recently.
