Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

When an application is outputting sound through pulseaudio and a second app tries to output via alsa dmix is blocked:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA open: Device or resource busy

If I kill pulseaudio and both application are using alsa it works fine.

Pulseaudio is dsigned to use the soundcard directly by default. You can always reconfigure pulseaudio to use dmix if you wish.

Since you have jack, alsa, oss and pulseaudio all in use at the same time I'd say the default should be changed to dmix. You cannot force a new (inexperienced) ubuntu user to mess with such things (whereas this is a point which works pretty out of the box in windows).
