Bug Description

My fully working sound configuration occasionally stops working. Symptoms are:
- System Settings -> Sound only shows "dummy output" and no input devices
- restarting pulseaudio has no effect
- aplay -l as root shows sound cards
- fuser -v /dev/snd/* shows nothing; /dev/dsp and /dev/seq do not exist
- Rebooting solves the problem

This did not occur on trusty but has occurred twice on utopic in the last month or two.

One more symptom - this syslog message occurred around the time sound stopped working, and hasn't occurred since:

Dec 19 08:36:02 peleg pulseaudio[4950]: [pulseaudio] sink-input.c: Failed to create sink input: sink is suspended.

Default sink name: auto_null
Default source name: auto_null.monitor

you have to provide pulseaudio verbose log and system before suspend and resume

seem auto null was selected when your sound card cannot resume

Hi Raymond,

I'm experiencing this problem again now, and the symptoms have changed slightly. Sound is still not working, but the input and output devices Internal Microphone (built-in audio) and Speakers (built-in audio) are still present. Would gathering debug information at the moment help?

Thanks,
Paul

did this happen when there are two or more user login since first user 's pulseaudio accquire the sound card and second user ' pulseaudio cannot open the sound card any more ?

@superquad-vortex2: This is my personal laptop; if there is ever any other user logged in, it is me via the text console. I suspect the log you've pasted above is showing old stale sessions. I've rebooted now to add a kernel update, so I can gather any information about the working state you need now. What needs collecting?
