What PulseAudio version is used? There is a known bug in PulseAudio 2.x causing VLC audio desync...

according to pulseaudio --vesion it is 1.1

Oh, that old. Yeah 1.x has latency problems too. VLC should only be used with 0.x or >= 3.0

well there are no repos for a version >= 3.0
the only repo i found was containing pulse 2.0
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ppa
(and it has the same problem as you mentioned ...)

do you have a repo for ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

So Ubuntu 12.04 (with pulseaudio 1.1) and Ubuntu 12.10 (with pulseaudio 2.1) are affected by this bug. Ubuntu 13.04 ships pulseaudio 3.0.

so i have to wait for an updated version of pulseaudio? lets hope it comes before 12.04.4 ...

Benjamin Drung (bdrung) wrote :

It is very, very unlikely that pulseaudio will be updated to a new upstream release (with the major version bump like 2.0, etc.) in a stable Ubuntu release. But it is possible to fix pulseaudio bugs in Ubuntu 12.04 by backporting fixes to the shipped version.

can i do something to speed this up?

Rémi Denis-Courmont (rdenis) wrote :

You can try Ubuntu 13.04 if you want to check if PulseAudio 3.0 addresses the problem (I'm not actually sure). I'd recommend downgrading to PulseAudio 1.1 instead, but I am not sure if that is even possible.

Otherwise, there is probably not much to do, other than wait for the next LTS release.

To speed fixing this bug up for Ubuntu 12.04, you could provide a pulseaudio patch. Finding/Getting this patch needs time and skill. You can cherry-pick a fix by finding the commit between pulseaudio 1.1 and 3.0 that changes the behavior for you.
