heard the first set of test tones, and my speakers were all working yesterday. Not sure what changed today.

It looks like you lost analog stereo output. Try resetting pulse configuration:
rm -r ~/.pulse*; pulseaudio -k

Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal) reached end-of-life on May 16, 2014.
