Bug Description
I have been experiencing a pulseaudio bug for some time (months), but only just now found the reproducer. Sometimes after login the sound indicator shows a speaker with dashes rather than the muted speaker or speaker with sound waves. When in this state there is no sound and the sound indicator doesn't work right: if you click the sound indicator, 'Mute' and the volume slider are not present.
Steps to reproduce:
1. reboot the computer and login (sound correctly works)
2. find the PIDs of pulseaudio with 'ps auxww|grep pulse'
3. logout of your session
4. *quickly* log back in
At this point, sound probably doesn't work which is easily seen by bserving the sound indicator. What I've noticed is that pulseaudio doesn't seem to be shutting down fast enough after logout such that if you logout and back in quickly, PIDs for pulseaudio for the user are the same as in step '2' and pulseaudio doesn't work correctly. On the other hand, if I wait a while (60 seconds?) before logging back in, the PIDs are different than in step '2' and sound works correctly.
There are two workarounds:
1. kill pulseaudio manually before logging back in
2. wait 60 seconds or more before logging back in
