PSPP 0.8.4 crashes when entering missing data in new string variable

Bug Description

1.) Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS Release: 14.04

2.) pspp:
  Installiert: 0.8.4-0ubuntu3~trusty1
  Installationskandidat: 0.8.4-0ubuntu3~trusty1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 0.8.4-0ubuntu3~trusty1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/adamzammit/pspp/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.7.9+git20120620-1.2 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe i386 Packages

3.) Create a new variable in PSPP and set it to 'string' and its content to 250 (nominal scale). If you try to enter the missing data value, PSPP will crash. This bug is replicable.

The problem is reproducible in the current upstream master branch. I have opened a bug report in upstream:
