Are you playing in OpenGL mode? What IWAD are you using (doom data?) Can you provide a hash checksum of your IWAD?

Fairly sure that this is a duplicate. Try the fixed package from Maverick: 2:2.5.0+dfsg1-5ubuntu1 http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/prboom
