Bug Description

Binary package hint: praat

when i want to play sound in praat, it shows up a msg box saying "can not open audio device. consult /usr/doc/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO."

i have added myself into the 'audio' group.

i have tried the instructions from the praat official site as follows, but it does not work:
##########################################################
1. Sound not working?

Praat uses the OSS sound system, which has superior audio quality for the types of sounds you need to play. A few Linux distributions nowadays have their OSS support switched off in favour of the ALSA sound system. If that's the case, try to run Praat with

   aoss praat

It is also possible that the device used by OSS (namely /dev/dsp) is hijacked by the "sound server" PulseAudio. If that's the case, either kill PulseAudio or try to run Praat with

   padsp praat
##########################################################

Here is some info about my computer:

$ uname -a
Linux hcsi46 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

praat version: 5.1.25-1

I find a record from Debian bug archive:

debian-bugs-closed
Bug#514652: marked as done (praat: Sound output does not work out of the box, needs OSS)

but praat in Lucid has already depends on 'oss-compat'.
so i think the 'aoss' is not necessary.

I have the same problem when I try recording sounds using a built in microphone on my laptop.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, Kernel 2.6.35-22.

I tried it with aoss and I could open the recording menu, but didn't get any signal from the microphone.

I installed praat latest version 5.2.11-1 in ubuntu 10.10
It can record and play sounds, draw diagrams etc. I found two bugs:

1) When recordinbg mono sound from web camera you need to tick the selection 'USB Device' and the selection 48000 Hz.
After you do that for the first time, the program is not recording. The problem is fixed when you tick the selection ' HDA Intel' and then tick back the previous selection 'USB Device'.

2) It does not write Greek. It can write some letters but not all.

Downloading praat binary from his homepage in http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/download_linux.html it works without problem.

To put the binary from the homepage in /usr/bin/praat works in Lucid an Precise.

I couldn't get this to work no matter what I tried.

As a workaround, I ran the windows exe through wine and it worked with no problem - hopefully that helps others as well.

As elmanytas said above, compiling from source and copying to /usr/bin/praat solves the problem. Tested on Vivid 15.04
