sky2 draws up to 1.27W of power without a link

Bug Description

Even with no network cable plugged in, powertop reports about 1W of power used by the sky2 (eth0) device. When unloading the module, the overall power usage goes down significantly, so although powertop doesn't always report the most reliable data about what single devices use, this one seems to be in the right ballpark.

As this is netbook hardware, a Watt is a lot, especially for nothing. I can't get per-device power usage estimates for Windows but the overall power usage was easily a Watt less than what I am able to achieve on Linux and this might be part of the problem.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Is it possible for you to check if there is a BIOS option to disable WoL (Wake on Lan)? If you have this option, could you please try to turn it off, check if the issue is still present and report back?

Unchanged for current Precise kernel. I'm going to try 3.3 too though.

Kernel 3.3 doesn't help either. If anything, I recorded a new record with almost 1.5W.

@Christian: can you please check your BIOS options, as per comment #3?

Luis, thanks for the hint, it never occured to me that WoL could affect a machine that is already "awake". Anyway, I did some more and more caruful measurements using powerstat and after these it seems that the problem is with powertop after all. Sorry for the mistake.

When unloading the sky2 module with active network otherwise (i.e. wifi), there is actually no change in power usage at all! When reloading the sky2 module it doesn't even appear in powertop. When activating networking again in network-manager (God knows what that does exactly), it reappears as power hog. However, measuring again, there is only a minimal increase in actual power usage as reported by the battery (about .13W with the standard deviation of the measurements being higher than that).

So I guess what I saw in the first place was other networking stuff or just fluctuations. Sorry again for doing the appropriate measurements *after* filing the report. I'm moving this to the powertop package as the problem seems to be in the estimates alone.

Bringing up an actual link BTW will make powertop show 6W or so for the device although the overall system usage is only 9W (from 7 before the link).

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → powertop (Ubuntu)

Great, thanks for the update. About the WoL: there is a known issue with some of the systems using sky2 that *could* have impact on power consumption. Hence the suggestion. Anyway, good to know your problem is now sorted out.

Ok, good to know. Well, after you had mentioned it, I checked it anyway but there doesn't even seem to be a BIOS option for WoL on my netbook. So the imagined power consumption probably isn't related to that known problem.
