Bug Description

Binary package hint: powernowd

I can't get powernowd to work -- can't even insert the kernel module:
# modprobe powernow-k8
FATAL: Error inserting powernow_k8 (/lib/modules/2.6.15-28-amd64-server/kernel/arch/x86_64/kernel/cpufreq/powernow-k8.ko): No such device

Here's the tail of /var/log/messages:
Apr 30 20:23:37 beavis2 kernel: [ 7780.188893] powernow-k8: Processor cpuid 70ff1 not supported

# uname -a:
Linux beavis2 2.6.15-28-amd64-server #1 SMP Tue Mar 13 21:03:51 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As per a similar old bug, I'm running sh -x /usr/share/powernowd/cpufreq-detect.sh:
+ /usr/sbin/laptop-detect
+ CPUINFO=/proc/cpuinfo
+ IOPORTS=/proc/ioports
+ '[' '!' -f /proc/cpuinfo ']'

Do we know what kernel(s) if any in Ubuntu's repositories have this patch included?

Confirming this, doesn't work for me either on my Athlon64 X2 3800+.

Just to push it again: Same problem for me. Any chance to see a fix in the near future? I just updated my mainboards BIOS (the update contained a patch for this processors support), but still Ubuntu (Feisty) recognizes only one core and powernow_k8 does not load ("Processor cpuid 70ff1 not supported" as quoted in post #1 of this thread). Not sure whether the patch made it into upstream yet - but I also don't know if there's any reason we have to wait for that provided the patch works as expected (and doesn't break something else ;)

Re-assigning from powernowd to linux-source-2.6.15 (the Dapper kernel where it has been reported for initially).
Can you please test, if this is fixed for Gutsy?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

By now, this is should be long fixed AFAIK. My Athlon64 X2 5200+ is supported just fine in more recent kernels (>= 2.6.22)

Feel free to reopen this bug if necessary, but I am certain this has been fixed by now.
