I do:

tar -jxvf nvbacklight-0.2.tar.bz2
cd nvbacklight-0.2
make && sudo make modules && sudo make install
sudo dpkg -i nvbacklight-dkms_0.2_all.deb

and reboot?

I'm testing with Ubuntu 9.10 64bits, I reboot now and give a new message for say if it works for me or not.
