I tried removing postgres-xc and the system reported that it wasn't installed. I then tried installing it (to see if installing it would overwrite a corrupt failed install with working files), but this failed with "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages".

Following reading this post: http://askubuntu.com/questions/223237/unable-to-correct-problems-you-have-held-broken-packages I ran `sudo apt-get update`.

The problem no longer occurs on reboot.
