This (slightly) newer version of poster has a couple more options:
ftp://ftp.
Notable improvements include the option to set the amount of overlap on the tiled pages, which is quite useful. Compiled OK in Intrepid and I will be testing some more today. Evince does not seem to like the output as much though - not sure if the issue is with poster or evince yet.

OK - turns out the newer version has some issues. I think it's OK to close this report - I should have tested more before filing this - sorry for the noise.
