Bug Description

In every started session I get this erros in .xsession-errors:

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:20860): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:20860): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release: 12.04

policykit-1-gnome:
  Installé : 0.105-1ubuntu3
  Candidat : 0.105-1ubuntu3
 Table de version :
 *** 0.105-1ubuntu3 0
        500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

dbus:
  Installé : 1.4.18-1ubuntu1
  Candidat : 1.4.18-1ubuntu1
 Table de version :
 *** 1.4.18-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expected: is to launch the session without those errors.

What happened: allways showing those errors.

More precisions:

I'm in autologin and autostartx with mingetty on tty1 without any display manager.

I would be glad if I could avoid seeing those errors everytime because I don't realy understand why dbus is looking for an org.gnome.SessionManager file without gnome installed.

I don't know if it has a relation with the problem but this is what I have in apport after every boot:

ERROR: apport (pid 13444) Thu May 17 07:32:58 2012: called for pid 1601, signal 11

Hi,

Thanks for your bug report.

The first warning is probably a bug in polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 itself.

"Dbus looking for an org.gnome.SessionManager file without gnome installed" (the second warning) is due to some features of gnome-session: polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 will try to register itself to gnome-session, which obviously fails with xfce4-session.

affects: xfce4-session (Ubuntu) → policykit-1-gnome (Ubuntu)

Thank you Lionel for your explanations, this is what I understood. Is there any way to avoid dbus of looking for gnome on a xfce4 system wich is quiet strange? And do I have to open an other bug report for the first error about polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 GLib-CRITICAL?

I forgot to mention that I'm usind xfce 4.10 but the errors were already present in xfce 4.8.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Changed in policykit-1-gnome (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

After this morning updates:

libpolkit-agent-1-0 (0.104-1) to 0.104-1ubuntu1
libpolkit-backend-1-0 (0.104-1) to 0.104-1ubuntu1
libpolkit-gobject-1-0 (0.104-1) to 0.104-1ubuntu1
policykit-1 (0.104-1) to 0.104-1ubuntu1

Nothing better, still got the two errors:

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:31333): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:31333): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

I have tryied to change etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop to this (commented lignes):

[Desktop Entry]
Name=PolicyKit Authentication Agent
Comment=PolicyKit Authentication Agent
Exec=/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=
NoDisplay=true
OnlyShowIn=XFCE
#;Unity;GNOME
X-GNOME-AutoRestart=true
#AutostartCondition=GNOME3 unless-session gnome
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=polkit-gnome-1

Without success, still thoes errors at every session.

Hi,
I also find this error line in the $HOME/.xsession-errors file in Lubuntu, today. This is Lubuntu Precise perfectly up to date.
You can see the 2 outputs of ~/.xsession-errors files here:
http://pastealacon.com/30431
http://pastealacon.com/30432

I hope all these ugly messages will be solved.

Regards,
Mélodie

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1369): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1369): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

Also seeing this in 12.10. Having problems with pam authentication as gnome keyring daemon pid is not being exported to env at boot.

just reinstalled python-keyring which was updated recently and rebooted - environment variable is now set fine but I still have the .xsession-error as reported above.
Before I did this I was getting gcr-prompter asking for a login password to add to the keyring, starting at seemingly random intervals. I have not had this appearing since I restarted 10 minutes ago.

no - sods law - as soon as I posted the above comment, gcr prompter showed up and something has reset the gnome-keyring-daemon pid and the gnome keyring file in /run/user/user-name/ but has not changed the associated environment variables. It did this at the same time as I started the ubuntu software centre although that might not be related.
