Bug Description

When the system goes on suspend because of time, or when I choose Hibernate the system can't resume. The only way to make it start up is a HW restart or turn it off and on.

Can you try using the "nvidia" (proprietary) driver? (you can install it via system settings => hardware drivers)

Hi Daniel.
Thanks for your mail.

I have done the installation. Now the driver is NVIDIA version 173.14.22
(Recommended), but it doesn't work.
When I choose Hibernate, the PC apparently saves the data on disk and
goes off. But when I turn it on again and select Ubuntu from Grub, the
display shows a black screen, and after a time reading the disk, the
display stops detecting signal from the PC, the same as when the PC is off.
If you need some aditional information, please tell me (with the
instructions to obtain it, because I'm a new user trying to switch from
WinXP).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards,
Alberto Pérez Rodríguez

Thank you for the additional information and having tried the other driver.
Unfortunately there's nothing more I can recommend you to try currently.

(For what it's worth, if I remember correctly I had the same result when using the nvidia driver during the Lucid development cycle).

Dear Daniel.
Excuse me for my delay.

In other PC I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 with:

NVIDIA Driver Version: 195.36.15
XServer Version Number: 11.0
Server Vendor Version: 1.7.6 (10706000)
NV-CONTROL Version: 1.22

It works very well.

Best regards,
Alberto.

I have a Thinkpad X22 with ATI display and a desktop with nVidia display, both experience problem resuming from suspend or hibernation.

Both systems seem to have successfully suspended/hibernated. Hitting the button to resume seems to wake up the systems and some HDD activities are registered but the screen remains blank and the systems just stop there. All I can do is to hold down the power button to force shutdown.

Both systems were upgraded from 9.10.

more info.

Thinkpad X22 with ATI Radeon Mobility M6
No /etc/X11/xorg.conf is used.
This system used to suspend and hibernate without a problem in 9.10.

The desktop is equipped with nVidia GeForce 7600GT
Again, no /etc/X11/xorg.conf is specified.
From the System>Administration>Hardware Drivers, there are only 3 drivers available: version 173, version 96 and version current which is currently in used as well. But 3 of them show that their licenses are Proprietary and I couldn't find the nouveau open source license driver.

I have Dell Precision M2400 laptop. The graphics card is NVIDIA® Quadro FX 370M.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 and removed all nvidia-* packages soon after. I now have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and libdrm-nouveau only. Suspend puts the laptop to sleep. Pressing the power button starts resuming and immediately gets into a state where the screen is fully lit (dark blue color) and flashing continuously. The WiFi indicator flashes, the Caps Lock indicator does not come on when I press Caps Lock.

Suspend wasn't working in Ubuntu 9.10 for me either although I can't recall the actual symptoms. It just never worked and I wasn't trying to use it. With the announced improvements I decided to try again in 10.4.

Actually had it working under 10.04, recently upgraded to 11.04 and just after to 11.10 and now I am on 11.10 Xubuntu and I can suspend the machine and it all looks like it goes down correctly, but when I resume (pressing any key) machine starts up and pretty quickly shows the grub menu and does a full restart instead of resuming the suspended session.

This is on a Sony VAIO with Intel Core i5 and Nvidia GeForce GT 330M and using the Nvidia Driver 280.13.

Let me know if you need further details.

alberto3316, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
