This happened in VirtualBox upon a fresh install of Ubuntu Natty Satanic Edition, an immediate package upgrade, reboot and then a dist upgrade to Oneiric.

This is not a bug in the Ubuntu plymouth package. It is likely a bug in the Ubuntu Satanic Edition that you installed from, which is not an official flavor of Ubuntu. You probably need to remove whatever is currently at /etc/alternativ es/text. plymouth and run dpkg --configure -a.
