garbled display on system shutdown/restart

Bug Description

The attached photo shows my HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook about to restart.

Visible in the photo are lines of text whose cursor has not returned to the left-hand side of the screen after newlines have been output, and five graphical dots in the middle of the screen.

I assume that the shutdown screen should be similar in appearance to the startup screen--that is, the five dots shown with a Ubuntu logo above them.
