This shows memory corruption. The function argument here is "y yet or" in little-endian, which is a substring of the displayed message:

So it's some kind of buffer overflow.

Any news on this bug? I'm having the same problem with Quantal Alpha. BTW, I'm sending plymouth-debug.log as Steve asked on the duplicate bug #985230.

My initial crash report was marked as duplicate, but since it may provide additional info, here it goes:

Don't know if it's this bug that affect the logout option that is non running well. A message says that something is still running with a runtime of 36s/no limit. I tried to logout from the livecd and it's the same..

ubuntu 18.04 - I was having trouble using Ctrl+Alt+F keys to switch to TTY, added `nomodeset` to GRUB kernel args, issue resolved. Removed `nomodeset` and got this plymouthd error on login. Kernel 4.16.0-041600-generic #201804012230.

I had this bug in 16.04 and problem persists after upgrade to 18.04
