ubuntu 10.04 will not shut down

Running ubuntu 10.04 amd64. Asus crosshair IV formula motherboard. AMD phenom II X6 black edition cpu. Kernel version 2.6.32-25-generic. When shutdown is initiated from desktop ubuntu splash screen appears and remains on screen. Computer never completes shutdown.

bug #580867 is absolutely not related. 580867 is reporting a restart instead of a shutdown. This bug reports an indefinite hang at shutdown.
