Bug Description
After upgrading from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS, when I startup instead of getting a splash screen I get the following message near the bottom of the screen:
init: plymouth-splash main process ($id) terminated with status 1
Then the machine hangs. I can continue by pressing ctrl-alt-del, after which the following message appears:
init: alsa-mixer-save main process ($id) terminated with status 1
Then the machine appears to shutdown (messages such as "asking all processes to shutdown" or similar) but instead lands me at the log-in screen! After that there are no problems. On shutdown I do briefly see the splash screen (the dots below the Ubuntu logo).
