Bug Description

During the boot-up process of Ubuntu 10.04, an error message appears on the boot screen (just below the "ubuntu" logo and below the blinking white/red dots). However, another message with instructions on how to proceed appears exactly on top of the error message, making it nearly impossible to read the error message.

This bug is about the two messages overlapping. See attached screenshot.

This bug occurs both when using the Nvidia proprietary driver, and ALSO when using the free nvidia driver. It seems unrelated to the driver used by X.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in plymouth.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Please run 'apport-collect 573483'.

What is the resolution of your display? Do you have more than one video output connected when this happens?

The display is 1920x1200, but during boot time, Ubuntu is not using that resolution. Instead, it is using something like 640x480, probably... I cannot tell really, because the image is stretched to fill the whole screen. I think this can be seen from the pictures I attached.

The video card is Nvidia, but like i said in the initial bug report, this bug occurs both when using the Nvidia proprietary driver, and ALSO when using the free nvidia driver.

I just ran the "apport-collect" command as you asked me to.

Thanks,

I'm experiencing this bug in 11.10 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. It happens regardless of the number of monitors I have connected (0-1). It's mildly annoying in that it hinders my ability to debug the shutdown process. I had a script that was blocking shutdown. Normally I would be able to read the script name live on the screen while it's being blocked, however with this bug I had to wait to reboot and check the logs.

This bug is still present. I just saw it happen in lubuntu 13.04.
My hardware is now an ATI card (I had an Nvidia card when I opened this bug in 2010).
