Boot hangs at splashscreen, KDM doesn't show up

Bug Description

This bug behaves similar to #538524 but happens with the released version.

After the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 everything was ok at first. But after a few reboots the system did not come past the splash screen anymore.

[ctrl]-[alt]-[F1] doesn't do anything. [ctrl]-[alt]-[del] starts the shutdown and the system reboots, hanging at the same stage.

Removing the "quiet splash" parameters before booting lets the system start.

I'm not really sure on what to do to diagnose this further.

Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04

I have the same problem, every few boots kdm won't show up and I can do nothing else but reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del. Most of the time the problem goes away after rebooting repeatedly a few times.

I have no idea when it was fixed. Neither do I know what fixed it. But today I just tried booting with "quiet splash" switches. And it worked.

I hope this is not just "by chance".

I think it might have been fixed by the update that also fixed the issue the splash screen had with the non-free nvidia/ati drivers. At least I am not seeing this problem since I installed that update. So I think you can close this bug Jan.
