Bug Description

Binary package hint: plymouth

Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.0~-14

After the update to the latest plymouth packages the boot appears to occur, but my laptop stuck at ubuntu logo screen.
Reboot (through Crtl+Alt+Del) works.
If I press the power button the computer do the shutdown process.
I waited about 10 minutes, but I can't reach the logon screen.

searching for plymouth on dmesg I found this
[ 12.991450] plymouthd[305]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fc15778bbdb sp 00007fffaed4f2a8 error 6 in libc-2.11.1.so[7fc157705000+178000]

plymouth itself should never block the boot process, even when it fails.

Can you try hitting Alt+F7, to see whether the login screen is waiting for you on VT7?

Please also run 'apport-collect' against this bug, your report is missing much key information that is included by default when using apport.

Changed in plymouth (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Could you describe this logo screen? Is it animating?

The logo screen is the new ubuntu splash screen while the services are starting.
It is animated until fill the five (or six) points of the "progress".
Sometimes a message to scan hard drives appear (with a message to press C in order to cancel hard drives scanning)

I see you've filed a few bugs on KDE - don't suppose you're using Kubuntu, not Ubuntu are you?

I have a desktop with a A785gm-m mobo, a phenom II x4 945 processor and a GeForce 8600gt video card that works pretty well with this version of plymouth (also using Kubuntu).

ok, if you're using kubuntu then this appears to be the same as bug #538524; marking as a duplicate.

Ah, awesome!

Could you try something unusual for me: edit /etc/init/plymouth.conf
and scroll down to the bottom, where there's a "pre-stop script" block.
The first line is about kdm.

Comment that line out (add a "#" on the front). Save the file, then
reboot.

What happens now?
