More steps would need to be provided in order to try and duplicate. This isn't a support forum but can post in the Ubuntu MATE community forum or try "Ask Ubuntu" first. I saw a few posts that look similar. First thing I'd try is getting the Grub screen to come up by holding down the Shift key during boot, though likely the folks in those forums can help faster.

I always see this grey screen for 2-3 sec at starting (after BIOS appears). I have two Ubuntu MATE 15.10 installations (netbook and desktop pc) and both are booting with grey screens. I think it's no bug....

We can file this as a bug against plymouth but I'm not sure if it helps as there are multiple bugs already filed with the same underlying cause. Having in mind that plymouth primarily uses KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) to display graphics and has some degree of framebuffer support there are some graphics configurations where plymouth just fall short.

What's the status of this? What is happening during the time this gray screen is shown? Why does it take significantly longer to make it to the login screen for Ubuntu Mate vs Ubuntu Server (incidentally by about the duration the gray screen is shown)?

If I change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
to show boot messages I see what is happening after the gray screen disappears, but I have no idea what goes on while it's there.

The gray screen covers the whole display when the GRUB_GFXMODE is commented out in /etc/default/grub, but when I set it to
GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080
The gray screen is painted in the middle of the screen on top of the GRUB bootloader screen, parts of which surrounding the gray screen are still visible, until the gray screen yields to boot messages after a delay of a few seconds.

Is all of this is normal, it's mystical to me and feels very weird. I'd like to know what's going on. Can somebody answer this?
