Bug Description

My computer: HP 530
Processor: Intel Celeron M CPU 530 @ 1.73GHz
Graphic card: Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2

I upgraded my Ubuntu installation in May:
* from 12.10 (kernel version: 3.5.0-28-generic)
* from 13.04 (kernel version: 3.8.0-19-generic)

(I believe that those were the kernel versions installed)

When starting my computer, this is what I see and do:
1. I see the BIOS
2. I briefly see a screen where I can select different ways to start Ubuntu (choosing the latest 3.8.0-* kernel)
3. I see a statement that it is loading that kernel
4. The screen goes black (but isn't turned off: the backlight is still on)
5. I hear the hard drive doing something, so I wait until I believe that I have been auto-logged in
6. I press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
7. I hear the sound that indicates that I'm at the login screen

When starting with 3.5.0-28-generic, everything works as expected (just like it did with 12.10).

(I haven't reported the bug until now, since I've got it to work anyway, but now it seems like I need to use the latest kernel to get Virtualbox to work)

FWIW:

When I start with 3.8.0-27-generic in safemode, and then start using failsafeX, it sort of works:
It's really slow, the screen now uses 1024x768, and there are visual bugs. But I get graphics.

Example of visual bugs:
* Along the left side of the screen there's a column of black (where the launcher would be, but I've set it to only show when I move the mouse there)
* Now I can start Virtualbox! But in Virtualbox, me Windows installation also shows black areas sometimes - e.g. large parts of the UI of Internet Explorer is blacked out

summary: - Kernel v. 3.8.* makes the screen black
+ Kernel v. 3.8.0 makes the screen black

My comment 3 was inaccurate.

My system was set to start with 3.5.0-28, and I simply assumed that it'd start with the latest system. So: 3.5.0-28 still works, 3.8.0-27 gives a black screen.
