Bug Description

I have set up a new Kubuntu 9.04 install. I have network connectivity with a wired network card integrated into an Asus M2NPV-VM mainboard, but I cannot see or configure this connection.

If I enter System Settings -> Network Settings -> Network Management tab, I see no wired connections listed there.

Also, /etc/network/interfaces is quite empty, I only have there:
   auto lo
   iface lo inet loopback

The strange thing is that the Network Management applet (the one in the taskbar, near the system clock) can see the connection and reports it as working, with the correct IP.

affects: kde-systemsettings (Ubuntu) → plasma-widget-network-manager (Ubuntu)

I have this identical problem with my Kubuntu install on an HP Compaq DC7800. My network works fine, but it doesn't show up in this tool.

My original /etc/network/interfaces has a little more in it:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

I've been trying to manually configure it, but without much success.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Tested with Karmic Alpha 5, same problem.

The connection is working, I have network connectivity. The plasma applet in the tray shows it as "Auto eth0 - Active", driver "forcedeth".

But if I right-click on the same icon in the tray, and choose "Manage Connections..." I get nothing. The wired connection does not appears listed anywhere. So, I can't change it's IP (which is wrong).

Check please the attached snapshot to see what I'm getting.

I can confirm this bug in Karmic Alpha 5. Wired (DHCP) is not seen, even when it works!

OTOH, should I install the Broadcom STA drivers and connect to a wireless connection, the wireless shows in KNetworkManager. But the wired one... never.

Same identical problem in Kubuntu 9.10 x64 version.

Why is this bug still marked as incomplete? Should be confirmed by now.

I can confirm this as well, in Kubuntu 9.10 x86 version.

I can hardly believe that only a few people are affected by this bug. I'm seeing it myself on 3 different systems, 2 desktops and 1 laptop.

Taking in consideration the fact that this was reported almost 2 years ago, shouldn't the importance be changed? I mean, I think that not being able to manage a network connection in a modern desktop-oriented operating system, shouldn't be something other than "Undecided"?

summary: - Kubuntu 9.04 Network Settings does not see any wired connection
+ plasma-widget-networkmanagement does not list any wired connection
