Confirmed that this only happens on Kubuntu and not Fedora.

Yes I think so. Although this problem doesn't occur on Fedora.

I can confirm that this does not occur on the 32-bit Fedora 22 KDE spin in VMware Player (Win7 Host), but it does occur on Kubuntu.

I ran this from real HW (sorry, different computer this morning, so it is not installed).

apt-cache policy open-vm-tools-desktop

Do you know the equivalent command in Fedora? Perhaps there is a different version of open-vm-tools-desktop there?

On Fedora 22 KDE Spin, Apper reports that open-vm-tools-desktop is 9.10.0-4.fc22
I wonder if Fedora's 9.10.0 is ahead of Ubuntu's 9.4.6 and this can be resolved by packaging the newer release.

https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/commit/f815ec597079716da64d51465f2a33c65427053b
seems to say that master stable is 9.10.0

Does this still occur? I see Kubuntu now matches the original Fedora 22 KDE Spin:
