Bug Description

Randomly when using a USB audio device my headphones will start screeching at a deafeningly loud volume.

This seems to be a documented bug in pipewire with a fix committed last week.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/2832

I'd say this is pretty major. The volume is not controllable and using headphones it was painfully loud causing my ears to ring for several minutes.

I suspect you've linked to the wrong bug. Upstream issue 2832 is about "noise" not "volume". And that problem started in 0.3.60 which does not formally exist in Ubuntu yet.

So let's start again. Please run the following command to collect information about the system:

  apport-collect 1998242

I could be wrong about the issue but I assumed it to be the cause because this was a closer report that was marked as duplicate.

Also this comment on the issue seems to explain why it was loud.
"Doesn't seem to matter if your Deadbeef software volume is lowered you get the system volume, which in my case was at full."

I didn't actually have it at full but i'm always struggling with the volume on the device so it sounds about right.
