This is a feature request, to make pastebinit a dependency of all or most irc clients.

Note: This should rather be filed as upstream bugs/requests against all IRC clients, then, and not the Pastebinit package/project.

I'm not going to change the status of this to Invalid, but this should really be filed against each individual upstream project for each IRC client (xchat, quassel, konversation, kvirc, irssi, etc.).

(And the status should become Invalid since pastebinit and all other IRC clients are separate entities/projects)

It's filed against the two most prominent chat programs in ubuntu now (this is indeed a packaging "issue", not one for upstream, and certainly not for pastebinit). I'll let somebody else decide on accepting or rejecting this. My feeling is that your best bet would be to convince the Debian maintainer of chat client packages to add a "suggests"-relation.

this should go against the xchat package in universe and the xchat-gnome package in main, since xchat and xchat-gnome are also popular. this'd also go against irssi too, since a lot of CLI users use irssi.

You haven't provided a reason why pastebinit should be a dependency of these IRC clients. What is the reasoning behind this?

Because of the mass of new users needing support on IRC.

You ask them to pastebin something and then you have to post a link or explain how to install pastebinit

It is frustrating to new users and users providing support.

Fedora does it (fpaste is installed by default).

It just makes good sense if you are providing irc support in a busy channel (#ubuntu). Saves a ton of time and frustration.

The question is, why be fixated on one specific client? There are multiple clients, and most of the time, handing the URL to a pastebin site instead of asking the users to install yet another software is much more straight forward and helpful. In the channels I hang out often enough a pastebin URL is part of the topic to point people at.

I'm not really that much convinced that this is the best approach to the issue. Why not tell users instead the URL to the sites and use the web interface which is capable of what they might need directly? Is it because they might be stuck without a graphical environment? Is it that common of an issue to hook into yet another dependency/recommends/suggests loop.

Also, you point out, fedora has something installed by default - that doesn't sound like it's done through a dependency, is it?
