I think that warning message is unrelated. I've seen that while launching other GTK applications.

Can you try killing the Pidgin process (right click on the Unity launcher and choose Quit, or run a `killall pidgin`) then try restarting it again. I think this bug is a duplicate of 879950 and 879960.
