Bug Description
For a while, the default sound configuration worked flawlessly. Then Pidgin went mysteriously silent. It became necessary to play with the settings over at Tools -> Preferences -> Sounds.
I changed the Method from "Automatic" to "ALSA". That worked for a while, and then it stopped too.
I discovered that this really needs to be set to "Command" with "aplay %s" as per the following:

* https:/
The configuration should work out-of-the-box. It shouldn't be necessary to play around with these settings.

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Sorry we don't always have the resources to get to every bug report. Ubuntu 11.04 is no longer supported so I'm going to close the bug.
